Hemming and hawing as innovation
Steve Hamm writes in Business Week about another absurd patent link here. IBM has succeeded in getting one on a method to insert hems and haws into artificial voices used in recordings to make them sound more realistic. Most speakers try to kill those habits. The patent is for "generating paralinguistic phenomena via markup in text-to-speech syntheses." Imagine that. Monopoly really encourages meaningful innovation.

By a strange coincidence, this patent contains much the same content as a patent of mine (in draft) entitled "An Apparatus and Method for Reduction of Queues in Automated Response Systems". The queue is reduced by inserion of lots of pauses, ums and ers and by telling users who talk during the playback of the recording to shhhh!
Beta testing of my apparatus has shown up to 99% reduction in queueing - as users slam down the phone before dialling directory inquiries for a new product supplier.
